Beware when you choose a name.

When you build a website and you want to optimise it etc, you tend to look at everything else and not the name.  This is usually because you’ve already thought of your name and you like it; there is nothing that will change your name is there?

Well this could change everything.  You see, the thing is when someone searches for your products and services online they are also searching other businesses, and not just yours; you might think this is obvious, but if you still don’t know how this relates to the title of this blog post then read on.  These other companies will perhaps sometimes have names and trademarks that link them directly to their product and/or service, and you have to be careful where you use them on your website.

Some companies will do this deliberately to get themselves higher in the rankings, but using someone else’s business name isn’t really very fair is it?  And putting someone else’s business name into your meta tags is pretty damn cheeky isn’t it?

These cheeky people have been sued in the past by very large companies and they have inevitably lost their fight, so you really need to look out.  If i’ve unwittingly given you an idea to put in use on your own website you better not think too much about it either.  I’ll give you an example.

Playboy Enterprises have sued many, many websites for using the terms playboy and playmates in their pages and domain names in order to increase their ranking position, and playboy have of course won the fight; they are huge!
